tidal waves & whirlpool destructions.

In the movie, Just Add Water, in my opinion the image in which i found to be the best example of the film was sand. As a child i was always fascinated by sand, by the way it felt and how it looked. Every time i would go to the beach i would dig my toes deep and just wiggle them around in delight. But in the movie, sand has a less positive effect on the people of Trona, than it did during my childhood days. Trona is a town covered in sand; a secluded desert wasteland without an exotic location. And just like the town in which it consumes, sand is just plain. Initially, nothing appears to be special about this town and its inhabitants; their lives have no color, they are beige, in thoughts and lifestyle. Like sand, the residents of Trona have succumb to the maelstrom tyranny of a Dirk, who controls the towns people, like the sea does the sand.

But sand is a miraculous thing. At first it seems to be hopeless, with no purpose or future use, but with a little bit of water, it becomes full of potential. It can build castles and skyscrapers and be blown into glass bottles and necklaces. Sand can be a powerful material, but it just needs assistance. Without the tyranny of the sea to hold it back, sand can be beautiful. Looking back, the people of Trona are not any different than sand. Once they have broken free from Dirk, they were able to move forward with there lives and to build something more powerful. We are able to really see the compassion and the beauty in which they posses...all they had to do was "just add water".

  1. I think you are writing an essay on the smallest of objects here... What is the large subject?

  2. I think your take on the assignment was very intriguing. I really like when you write that the townspeople are "beige" it re-enforces the point that they are really bland and plain, not really a color people think of a lively. You use your small object (sand) quite interestingly. First you talk about it as a vehicle of discovery. You really liked to play in it and explore it, but then you implement sand in a negative light as a "secluded desert wasteland". This contrast gives a new perspective of sand that I did not think of. Whenever I picture sand I see a beautiful beach, you used it in a more meaningful way. I like it!

  3. i apologize dr lay...i thought my "large object" was apparent. I was simply writing about how sand is soo plain and overlooked by people...like the town of Trona...but with a little help, in the case of sand it would be water...and in the case of the people of Trona it was Danny DaVitos character, they can achieve and create something worthwhile.
