THe Effects of Climate Change

Sometimes if global warming will really result the way the scientists say it will. Of course i do believe that global warming is a problem we need to work towards resolving, but is this really the right way? We are trying to give numeric values to carbon emissions and measure the gases in the ozone layer...and quite frankly i dont think they are things in which you can measure like that. I personally feel that the only way in which we can effectively progress forward is do a complete 180 lifestyle change. We need to stop thinking about the world only during our lifespans and become broader.

Now, in reference to the ideas Broome has presented us with...I think this guy might be on drugs. It is NOT the job of the wealthy to fix this issue. They arent the only ones who exploit planetary resources...in fact it can be debated that the lower class of society are more responsible considering they makeup a larger portion of society than the wealthy and also that they have so many more issues to deal with..using "green" technology is probably not a high priority. Honestly we all need to realize that the way we live our lives have no real benefit to the future. We need to stop measuring, arguing and debating about the numeric values of unmeasurable things and just stop being such one-track minded people.

the planet is going to kill us.

According to Phelan, the planet is self-extincting. He mentions that human beings used to be nomadic coastal dwellers and now we have become these stationary beings, who have sped up the process of evolution. How through our advances in technology we have become an overpopulated, disease spreading society...and did I mention we are terrified of any type of climate change?

Now Carlin, in contrast to Phelan believed that the things we experience today are just inevitable. That planet earth is self cleansing and no matter what we do "a few plastic bags and aluminum cans" aren't going to be a fatal catalyst. I believe that Carlin makes a valid point..when we think about it logically the planet has been through so many things for a little bit of garbage to cause it to self-combust. We need to just calm down and let nature take its course.

tidal waves & whirlpool destructions.

In the movie, Just Add Water, in my opinion the image in which i found to be the best example of the film was sand. As a child i was always fascinated by sand, by the way it felt and how it looked. Every time i would go to the beach i would dig my toes deep and just wiggle them around in delight. But in the movie, sand has a less positive effect on the people of Trona, than it did during my childhood days. Trona is a town covered in sand; a secluded desert wasteland without an exotic location. And just like the town in which it consumes, sand is just plain. Initially, nothing appears to be special about this town and its inhabitants; their lives have no color, they are beige, in thoughts and lifestyle. Like sand, the residents of Trona have succumb to the maelstrom tyranny of a Dirk, who controls the towns people, like the sea does the sand.

But sand is a miraculous thing. At first it seems to be hopeless, with no purpose or future use, but with a little bit of water, it becomes full of potential. It can build castles and skyscrapers and be blown into glass bottles and necklaces. Sand can be a powerful material, but it just needs assistance. Without the tyranny of the sea to hold it back, sand can be beautiful. Looking back, the people of Trona are not any different than sand. Once they have broken free from Dirk, they were able to move forward with there lives and to build something more powerful. We are able to really see the compassion and the beauty in which they posses...all they had to do was "just add water".

The Reality Tests.

A few weeks ago, while spending sometime with a friend i was introduced to the function of the human eye. I learned that similarly to when driving a car, the human sense of sight also has blind spots. However what i was more amazed to find out, was that these blind spots aren't in the corners or on the sides...but they are literally directly in front of our faces. Its amazing also, because the areas in which our eyes are unable to see...our brains make up for it. It is incredible the capabilities of the human brain.

Now in reference to Roebke's article "The Reality Tests", none of us perceives the world as it exists fundamentally. We do not observe the tiniest bits of matter, nor the forces that move them, individually through our senses. none of us perceives the world as it exists fundamentally. We do not observe the tiniest bits of matter, nor the forces that move them, individually through our senses. We really do create the things we observe simply because our bodies do not have the capabilities to see things as they are.. our brain interpret the holes in our perceptions to make the world seem whole.

My Writing Center Experience.

During my trip to the writing center, I found it to be slightly more informal than my other experiences with writing tutorials. My appointment was scheduled with Allison, and although she was very good at helping me with my paper, when i first walked in there I was very taken aback at what i heard. Apparently there had been some creepy writing center stalker on the prowl trying to pick up one of the girls who worked there. So i spent a good 10 or 15 minutes listening to how some weird guy, wouldn't stop creepin, and how he eventually got in some other guy who worked at the centers face. Allison was great when we actually got around to discussing my work, but by the time we did I was just not into it anymore...the topic of the paper was very confusing to me and although her help was very useful...it didnt really help the confusion that i was feeling... so i did what i always did when i dont know what im writing about...rant. i just went on a windy wording rant...for about 4 pages...and now here i am with a crappy paper that needs to be revised. Oh and did i mention im still confused about it. Where do i go from here????

FFW 4/14

What is a writer? Well, not to sound from the textbook, but a writer is a person who creates written work. A writer is someone who can convey the ideas in there head, and clearly put them to paper. However, as to the question whether or not I am a writer, I would be forced to respond with a no. I have said many times before, i am not a writer...i am a thinker. I have ideas swirling around in my head, but do i necessarily have the gift and even the desire to bring them to text and convey my thoughts openly...no i do not. I am a thinker and not a writer, because i enjoy the concept of "what if", and writers do not have the luxury to partake in the "what if" concept, or they will simply confuse their audience. There is no room to wander and stray and change their opinions midway through text...and even if they did what would happen..would they be considered successful?

The United States of Stuff.

When I was younger my mom always told me "the more you see the more you want". I never understood what that meant when i was younger, but as i have slowly began to explore the world the meaning behind this seems clearer than ever to me. Today in 2010, we live in a society where our happiness and all of our goals and desires are fueled by one thing: TO BUY STUFF. We are a gluttonous generation, whose only desire is to want, then once our wants are satisfied they only grow. It is very rare for anyone nowadays to just go into a store with the intention of buying only one thing and walk out with only that. Because we are a society that is filled with a never ending supply of wants, we have created this world where greed and expansion is the center.

We are a society of excess; everything we own is in excess; everything we desire is in excess; and everything we have available to us is in excess. If Dante had to place us in his inferno, we would all be in Circle 3. Swimming in piles of wasted food, never worn sweaters, half empty water bottles and the latest Apple technologies, being forced to accept the severity of our inconsiderate self-indulgent lifestyles. "Stuff" is omnipotent, and we have become its devotee.

Writing gave me Anxiety

How do you interpret Derrida’s fear of writing?
-After watching Derrida's video about his fear of writing, it appears to me that this fear is really just a strong burst of creative influence that is filled with passion and emotion making it overwhelming and somewhat frightening to Derrida at times.

Have you ever experienced anxiety about the power of what you write?
-I have often felt anxiety about what i write because when I write I have so many thoughts swirling around in my head all at once, they tend to come out in a long and sometimes very powerful rant. I forget the formalities that belong with writing, and i just let go. And although there is nothing wrong with that, i cant help but fear how readers will perceive my work.

What motivates such fear?

- I believe that such fear is motivated through a creative desire to produce work that will leave readers feeling speechless. No matter what type of writer you are, whatever your topic may be about, all writers really have the same goal..."leave their audience completely speechless and in awe". And although this goal motivates writers, it also creates fear within.

Does Derrida entrust the written word with a particular kind of power?

-I think Derrida gives the written word a certain type of power, because as he mentioned in the video it creates a type of panic over him. So in this particular situation, the power of words causes the him to feel a sense of anxiety as well as a somewhat aggressive standpoint to the audience, depending on how much panic the author is feeling during the time of creation.

Twelfth Night Play

On Sunday March 21st, I saw the play entitled Twelfth Night, here at Hofstra. And although I went into the play with little hopes of finding enjoyment, I was somewhat surprised. Altogether the production was not 100% terrible, and it really helped me gain a better understanding of things that i had previously read. Personally, I had never picked up on the obvious, yet subtle romantic attraction that Orsino had for Cesario while reading the play, but as i watched the play it was defiantly more obvious. I was actually take back a little by this, because i thought it may have been a twist on the play, guess not. There were many enjoyable characters as well in the play such as Sir Toby who was very lively who really amused me. However my only complaint about the play was the strange southern accent that the characters seemed to have, inconsistently at times. From all my knowledge of Shakespeare and his works I don't think he ever wrote "homeboy from the south" type characters.

FFW: for 3rd unit

Language is a slippery vehicle...

In the poem by Robert Hass "The Problem of Describing Trees", there is a very delicate balance with the words the poet uses. He so enchantingly describes this world in which human life and nature co-exist. There is an unknown voice, being heard here and the audience doesn't know what to make of it. "Dance with me, dancer...Oh I will", but one must wonder which dancer is has taken leader? Is it the human being or the tree?

But unlike Hass's poem, Hubris at Zunzal by Rodney Jones, gives identity to the speaker. But also there is some type of importance that is created about the things in which Jones's uses as comparisons to language. He has taken a strong stance on language as he paints his poetic picture. "Held in my hand..", Jones learns that language can be infinite, with ideas that come and go as they please, but it is up to those of us that interpret language to give it meaning.

Focusing to Freewrite: part 3

Act III: Scene i: line 148: Viola: "Then think you right. I am not what I am."
Olivia: "I would you were as I would have you be."

Viola here, tells Olivia to stop denying who she really is, and it response Olivia tells Viola that she thinks the same of her. The above quotes are filled with sarcasm and bitterness I feel. That Viola is not what Olivia believes here to be, and Olivia simply tells her to be herself, that she loves her for what she is and nothing more than that. How she loves Cesario more than anything else, and even though she loves him soo deeply she understands now that he doesn't necessarily have to feel the same way about her.

Focusing to Freewrite: part 2

Act II. Scene V. line 143: Malvolio: "...and yet to crush it a little, it would bow to me..."

I believe that Malvolio is saying that if he shakes it up a little, he may be able to figure out what is means. The riddle in which Maria has written for him as another practical joke, has tricked Malvolio and he truly believes that it is a love note for him since the letters "M, O, A, I" are all part of his name. However I also believe that when he tries to figure out what it means, it can symbolize Malvolio's attempt to figure out all these tricks that have been played on him throughout the play.

words are just words: Shakespeare concordance data

1. What thematic strands have you located?

-Secrets, lies, veil, disguises, delude...

2. Where is the data you retrieved found? What is happening in context when Shakespeare employs this particular theme or image?

-there is no specific point in Shakespeare's play "Twelfth Night" in which you should look for secrets and deception, because it is truly everywhere. Every action made, every sentence spoken can be found to be full of delusions. One of the main occurrences in which there is an obvious use of the thematic strand in question is Viola's disguise as Cesario, which eventually causes the chain of events that occur.

3. How does the data you retrieved support your first thoughts on Shakespeare’s obsessive use of a particular image? What can you argue about Shakespeare’s figuration?

-My thematic strand can conclude that Shakespeare is obsessed with drama and scandal, and especially the deceit that comes with it. Everyone is always lying and playing tricks on one another throughout the play; he wanted to create this dark world of mystery and secrets in what seemed like a pretty bright and happy one.

small object..LARGE SUBJECT.

So have you ever had a moment where you felt like you were "the man". You had an idea and it was completely brilliant, flawless unbeatable and much more? Well that's how I felt with this paper when I first thought about it. In my mind I was like "OMG I GOT THIS! I have a plan and it's gonna be awesome, Dr. Lay isn't going to know what to do this paper is gonna be that good." And then i started righting...and I never have been so wrong in my life. Now don't get me wrong the concept was great, you know 100 calorie snacks and how they cause society to forget how to exhibit self control. That's defiantly a start quality concept there, right?!

Anyway I had so many ideas going on in my head and so many thoughts and opinions..I just started to ramble (cleverly constructed rambling), but a long 5 page ramble nonetheless. By the time I was finished, my mental capacity was exhausted and i just could even bring myself to "cut it up", fighting with this monster once again.

In the end although my work was not bad, it was not my best. I created a literary mess of madness and insanity...and now the long awaited task is before me again: i must go back and clean it up :(

the pen is mightier than the sword: inkshedding

Act II. Scene IV. Lines 132-4: "I am all the daughters of my father's house, and all the brothers too- and yet i know not."

I think this is Viola's way of saying that she is the only sibling left alive in her family. In the previous lines of the play, Orsino asks if her sister died of love and the above is her response. She does not know if their is anyone that she maybe related to, but also this could represent her feelings on the possibility of her brother's death.

Another possible explanation behind the above mentioned quote is that even though she is a woman, she is disguised to be a man. The quote would mean that she is BOTH the only daughter & the only son of her father as far as she knows. Since the possibility that her brother may have died, she adds " yet i know not" to show the confusion she is faced with currently.

Taking Wildness in Hand

With the current craze of ecological preservation that has recently swept our planet, I feel as though we neglect to put emphasis on all of the shrubbery and vegetation that is affected from global warming. I have constantly been plagued with images of helpless polar bears that struggle to stay afloat on melting ice rafts and other affected animals in their suffering habitats, but in Michelle Nijhuis's article "Taking wildness in hand..." she enlightens her audience on other very important aspects of this issue that really caught my attention: Trees.

The Torreya taxifolia was once a tree that could be found in abundance, and according to her article, was "plentiful enough to be cut for Christmas trees, its rot-resistant wood perfect for fence posts. But at some point in the middle of the last century—no one is quite sure when—the trees began to die." During her travels to different parts of the United States, Nijhuis made several visits back to the Florida park where she found these trees, and the few that remained had grown sickly. With thinning needles that were sparse; they had grown only a few feet tall with trunks no thicker than a small wrist. These once festive looking trees had developed some time of tree disease due to increase in deer and groundhogs in their environment.

After reading that portion of the article, I found it really upsetting to move onto the rest. I realized that their are so many other factors that contribute to the environmental problem our planet is currently facing. There are so many plants and trees that have been found to have medicinal properties and unique characteristics, and what is this particular tree is no different. As the result of human development we have forced nature to adapt to our ways, causing some very unfortunate affects. This article has made me realized that global warming and the related crisis is not limited to harsh temperatures melting ice-caps and drowning wildlife. There is so much more at stake, that we as a society don't even realize. We, as part of nature, are all tied together and the faster we take responsibility for the actions of ourselves and our ancestors to sooner we can take initiative to fix it. We need to wake up and smell the sweet scent of pine and taste the salty spay of the ocean waters and realize that we may be the last generation to have that oppurtunity.

Focusing to Freewrite: part 1

Act II. Scene ii. Line 25: Viola: "...I am the man...."

In this portion of the play, Viola is really trying to make sense of the love fiasco with Olivia. The above mentioned quote is part of a large monologue in the play where she realizes that Olivia really is in love with her, as much as she loves Orsino. She blames the disguise she has chosen to wear for Olivia's infatuation, and as she says "What will become of this? As I am man,My state is desperate for my master’s love. As I am woman, now, alas the day,What thriftless sighs shall poor Olivia breathe!", she realizes that because of this the love triangle between her, Olivia and Orsino might as well be a dream. She is man
and she is woman and she does not know how to reconcile this situation.

In class FFW

In II.iii.179, Maria calls her scheme to manipulate and embarrass Malvolio "sport royal..." What do you make of this?

The term "sport royal" I believe means that her scheme is going to be a lot of fun, almost like a game. She is very playful and somewhat manipulative and this scheme of hers is an opportunity to express that playful side of hers. She really wants to make a fool out of Malvolio and although I do not believe she means for it to end badly, it may cause more drama in the play. This term also could coincide with the motif of hunting that is shown throughout the play, in the sense that Maria is chasing Malvolio down (emotionally) in order to make a fool out of him. In a time where women are usually the objects of pursuit and men are the hunters, it also allows Maria to switch roles and assert superiority over her male counterpart.

Focus Freewrite

After reading the Act I of Twelfth Night, I can't stop thinking about...what may progress between the love triangle of Viola/Cesario, Olivia & Orsino. There is so much scandal and drama that is occurring at such an early point in the story. I am curious to find out if Olivia and Orsino will eventually discover that the beloved and trusted Orsino is really the female and aristocratic Viola. The love triangle has so many layers of complexities it has me lost in this world shakespeare created for the audience. I want to know all that each character is doing and thinking about each other all the time. No other characters are important in my mind currently, I just want to learn what will happen with their love for each other.

invisioning & revisioning....

As a writer and creative mind, the revision process for me can be somewhat upsetting. It is the opportunity to see myself as a flawed writer and to repair these flaws. Repair however is very simple, I like to review my work after a significant amount of time has gone by. It could be a few hours maybe even a few days depending on how productive I was being that day. By going back after a lengthy time period, it assures that I won't be in the same mind frame that I was at the time of creation. I can cut up my work with ease since I am reading these papers with a different mind-set.

My writing style is like a ripple on a pond it starts of small, exact and intricate and then all of a sudden it just multiplies into something I don't even know. It is like a cute little fluffy puppy that grows up so suddenly and turns into an ravenous monster of a dog. I go on a rant about things and as soon as i realize it I know i need to stop it and just walk away. I only come back to my writing once I know my mind frame changed, and only then can I successfully revise my writings.

virtual iraq.

Sue Halpern's article really intrigued me after as i was reading it. The idea of "prolonged-exposure" therapy seemed to be a really ingenious way of dealing with PTSD that so many of our soldiers sent overseas are suffering from. Today our society is very used to have prescription medications fix our psychological disorders, but all these drugs do is cover up the problems, providing a temporary feel good for as long as the drugs are in effect. But with Virtual Iraq, it will really help soldiers and their doctors dig under the surface to really help these suffering soldiers recover from all of their traumas.

It snowed last night, and...

Sooo....it snowed last night and I didn't even know. I was snuggled up warm and cuddly in my bed as dreams of sugar plums danced in my head....not. But seriously, I really had no idea that it was snowing outside until i woke up this morning and saw the light powder dusting that sprinkled the ground. Last night as it snowed I had emerged my self into the world of nerve cells, as I wrote a forensics paper until the early hours of the morning. So although it wasn't enough snow to make me hopeful of a snow day, I couldn't help but gasp. Even this small amount of frozen water can cause a change in my daily process, but there is something so amazing about snow that just makes everything feel simply magical.

high-tech trashyness.

Upon reading Carroll's article, High-tech trash, I realized that the world is nothing but a giant hypocrite. I know it sounds harsh and extremely rude on my part, but its true. We have made attempts in what we believe to be a step forward into the going green through conferences like Copenhagen, and promoting eco-friendly resource use and better recycling programs. And even taken steps towards instilling penalties for those who have violated environmentally friendly laws. But i am starting to wonder what is the point. The prominent nations have talked a big game with their advertisements and effusive words of change, but when it really comes down to it is all talk. We claim we are trying to being green and recycle these technological devices which can be harmful if left to sit in a landfill, but thats what we have let them do. We moved them from one location to another. We have hid our trash in the mountains of exotic lands in hopes no one would catch onto what we are really doing. AS LONG AS WE DON'T SEE IT, THE PROBLEM DOESN'T EXISIT. And this is the truth. "Out of sight and out of mind", and therefore we allow ourselves to think we are making progress, when we just sit back and lie to ourselves and the rest of the world, and i frankly have never been more outraged!!!

red bull gave me wings..and they flew away.

We are a society that is constantly on the go. In a time where the 8 hrs a day/5 days a week schedule no longer exists, it is not a surprise that the average american cannot be limited anymore to regular, house blend or french roast for there on the go "energy boost". So we have welcomed the beautiful bubbly baby into our house, naming it Redbull . The high energy boost that it provides us with due to high amounts of caffeine and sugar, luring us in closer and closer to it with its lime color and carbonation.
So there is no surprise that Redbull is home to stay, and grow up in our homes. With its sweet talk of revitalization and being able to lift up your spirits during a long day has wooed the teenage, college and middle-aged girls and boys, sweeping them off their feet and into grocery store, convenient stores gas stations and cafes around the globe.
But like every "heartthrob", they get bored easily and move on with there lives, causing its victims to crash rapidly. Falling into a lethargic state of mind, feeling shaky nervous hungry and even more exhausted than before. He gives us wings to fly high up into the sky with and once we get to cruising altitude, he lets us fall.

an abstract analysis.

http://www.cnn.com/2010/TECH/03/04/ie6.funeral/index.html

Nichola
s Carr in his article examines the idea if "google" really has made the modern american somewhat less intelligent. When he refers to google, in a sense it can be viewed as something much larger, the internet as a whole, and even other forms of modern technology. Giving many reasons for these ideas, internet has taken away the patience we have then reading books and long articles. In addition we no longer seem to be able to absorb any type of text that seems to be in excess. In order to support this claim Carr mentions how when one reads articles and researches through internet sources, we tend to skim through very rapidly, and jump from page to page and source to source only selecting what we need to know, and not diving deep into it. Further more through these accusations Carr warrants that everyone has access to the internet and uses it similarly.

Is google making us stupid.

http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200807/google

So as technology continues to become vital to our existance, like breathing, many people such as Nicholas Carr cannot help but indulge themselves in the concept "Is Google making us stupid". Well personally after reading his article, I can't help but think differently about the side effects of our technological dependance. It is without a doubt in my mind that as we begin to change our literary mediums our way of thinking begins to change as well. However this can be viewed simply as a form of adaptation to environment.Continuous use of the internet and dependance on it for various reasons, has just "inevitably caused us to take on the qualities of those technologies".

We are the generation of options. We constantly need to be on the go, and through the internet this need has made itself available right at our fingertips. Google has created the very thing we crave when it comes to knowledge. It has given us the options we need, and allows us to pick and choose what we want to read and how we want to think. Also more importantly, it keeps us moving, our minds are always on the go, flipping through pages, youtube videos, and other internet mediums. So I cannot find myself to think that the internet has really made us less intellectual as we were many decades ago.

Our internet today is simply the evolved version of a book on tape...right?
